Gold Overlay

This photo shows the background areas removed. At this point small flat gravers are used to trim off the teeth in the background.
Block sanded, stippled, and ready for shading.
The completed overlay is show next to a penny for size comparison. This was a quick demo, and for the sake of time, I kept the design fairly small and simple.

This overlay was done as part of an advanced engraving class demonstration.

Remember that overlays are not as strong as inlays, so keep this in mind if you're considering using them on gun project. For the right job, overlays can be much faster than inlays, and offer great flexibility in design.the end
