Making 24K Gold Wire by Mike Cerelli - Page Four

The completed ingot.
crucible The bar is cooled in pickling solution.
The button is removed and the bar is neatly trimmed, filed, and sanded to remove the 'fins' which formed during the pour. This is necessary before the bar goes to the rolling mill.

The freshly cast bar is fed through the rolling mill a couple of times to work harden it, which compacts and organizes the grain structure before annealing. This makes the bar more stable. The thicker the bar, the more it can be reduced with each pass. Always feed the same end of the bar into the rollers. Anneal whenever the gold has been reduced 50-60% in size to avoid cracking and splitting.
