Engraving a Coat of Arms

The helmet is engraved with various flat gravers with slightly rounded heels. I find that round gravers are often too round for my liking, and I feel more comfortable with a modified flat. Since I'm working in reverse, I examine my progress by frequently pressing a piece of Silly Putty into the engraving. Before cutting the fine detail in the helmet, I lightly texture the helmet with a rounded punch with textured surface. This adds a bit of contrast and also smoothes out the marks left by the graver. Normally the helmet extends over the top of shield a bit more, but I must leave room for lettering on this job.
The detail in the helmet is cut with a tiny rounded graver shaped from a knife graver. The heel is kept extremely short, and the area behind the heel has been ground away. This allows me to cut inside the deep helmet and shield areas without the graver contacting the surrounding edges.
A Silly Putty impression shows a positive of the reverse engraving.
A border is cut inside the shield and around the outer edges, and the symbols are lightly scribed.
